Acne treatment guidelines and schedule:
It is always nice to know what to expect when starting new treatments. Here is how it works at Cosmetic Acupuncture Melbourne:
Initial Consult: Your first appointment will be an initial consult with Dr. Vivian Tam, principal Doctor of Chinese Medicine at CAM. You can book an Initial Consult Face to Face or Telehealth, or book an Initial Acne Acupuncture which includes a consult and acupuncture treatment too.
In this consultation, Dr. Vivian will
- assess and diagnose
- write up your treatment plan
- prescribe custom herbal prescription
- discuss acupuncture plan if applicable.
PLEASE NOTE: Telehealth and Chinese Medicine only (no acupuncture) appointments are also available for those who cannot attend the clinic. This is a very popular and successful way to treat acne, too.
Acupuncture and/or Herbal Medicine. Book in for acupuncture with any of our highly trained and skilled acupuncturists. Your herbal medicine will be dispensed for you during this appointment.
If you do not require acupuncture, and are only requiring herbal medicine, you can pick up your herbs at the clinic or have them posted out to you.
Review consultation: Review consultations with Dr. Vivian Tam are essential to review progress or make any modifications to your herbal or acupuncture treatments based on your response. If you have responded very well, your review might be to discuss how to wean off your herbal medicine.
In summary, a review consultation may be to: re-assess, re-evaluate current plan, modify Chinese Medicine formula.
Wean off: Our acne treatments aim to treat the root cause of acne, and ideally, you will not require to have treatment on an ongoing basis. Once your skin is clear, it should remain clear.
Our treatments with Chinese Medicine and acupuncture work on getting long term results by looking at the skin holistically.
Address scarring: This is an extra step if patients want to go on to address their post-acne scarring.
Once the active acne has calmed down, a lot of people are left with acne scarring in the form of pitting, lumps, redness and hyperpigmentation. Facial acupuncture can be used to improve this and to speed up the healing process. Read more about acne scarring here.

What kind of treatment will I have?
Acne is usually an external manifestation of a disharmony internally and a thorough assessment of what is actually causing your pimples will be performed in your Initial Consultation with Dr. Vivian Tam and treatment will be targeted to eliminate stubborn acne from the root cause. There are four main patterns that are present in Acne sufferers, and Chinese Medicine aims to balance the disharmonies.
How long does it take to see results?
Patients report changes in skin within 1 – 2 weeks. Inflammation has completely reduced and new breakouts are much more infrequent. Clear skin may be noted within 6 weeks.
Everyone responds differently to treatments and times may vary from patient to patient, however, these reports are what is most commonly seen at Cosmetic Acupuncture Melbourne.
